Title: Invisible
Author: Neuralclone
Rating: Green cortina for drugs and violence
Word count: 335 words
Warnings: Experimental narrative, and Sam angst. *G*

Somewhere in the future they are pumping drugs into his veins - drip, drip, drip.

***

They find her body on the upper floor of a deserted warehouse. Sam crouches beside the corpse and gently exposes the inside of her left arm. As he expects, puncture marks cover her skin from wrist to elbow.

***

Gene slams his drink down on the bar. "Another druggie dead of an overdose," he says. "Case closed."

***

Sometimes when reality (unreality) becomes too much, Sam takes a smooth whiskey ride to oblivion. Down it slides, down he slides, safe from the world outside (inside) until the morning's hangover. Sometimes Sam wonders why, if this is all in his head, he didn't pick a nicer world to inhabit.

***

"Where's her gear, then?"

***

She has a name, but no real existence. When he asks people about her, they just shrug, and their eyes slide away. Did her pain make her invisible, Sam muses, or did her invisibility precede her pain?

***

"You better watch it, Sammy-boy. I'll be keeping my eye on you."

***

Sam sits in the car waiting. He has a real lead at last. As he peers into the darkness over whitened knuckles clutching the steering wheel, it doesn't occur to him to ask why this case is so important to him.

***

"He was her dealer."

***

The fight is short and bloody. As the other's steel-capped boot connects with his knee, Sam goes down. A red light flares behind his eyes.

***

Somewhere in the future, people are talking about him. He hears the voices, blurring into the sounds of a heart monitor. Beep. Beep. Beep...

***

"I got him. I got the bastard." Sam blinks up at Gene through the blood in his eyes.

Gene grunts as he holds out his hand and helps Sam up. "Seems to me," he says, "the bastard nearly got you."

***

Work, whiskey. It's all the same. Everyone has their drug of choice.
